Ellen equals career best

15/03/2008 10:30:01 p.m.
Ellen Barry, who is a member of the Canterbury Tennis Regional Performance Centre under the guidance of Glenn Wilson, has advanced to the semi-finals of the ITF $25k Women’s event being played in Kalgoorlie West Australia.
Barry outlasted Australian Institute of Sport Scholarship holder Allison Bai 4-6 7-5 7-5 to advance. She will meet Romanian Agnes Satmari in the semi-finals and will be looking for a career first final at this level.
Once before Barry has advanced to the semi-finals of a tournament of this level. That was in February 2007 in Melbourne, where she fell to the 2008 Australian Open ‘darling’, Casey Delacqua, who is now the top ranked Australian that is fast approaching the WTA top 50.
The three wins in Kalgoorlie so far this week follow five straight wins in Hamilton last week at the ASB Pro Circuit where Barry clinched her first professional title. It would appear that eight straight victories at the professional level is Barry’s best ever sequence and should help her to a career best ranking in the next week or so.
Meanwhile, Barry’s focus will be in the gritty Romanian that stands in her path to the final. Satmari had a strong 6-2 6-4 win over Christina Wheeler in her quarter-final and is in good form. Wheeler herself is on the rise again this year and last week won an AMT event in Perth over Jessica Moore in the final.
